Radically Reduce Crime In Jamaica Now, Or Say Goodbye To Tourism

I join the many good and patriotic Jamaicans all over the planet who are disgusted and nauseated by the break down of law and order on our beautiful island Jamaica. Crime is at an alarming rate. As a matter of fact, crime made an exponential quantum leap across the island. The moral fabric of our lovely island has been torn apart. It is a disgrace to see how our culture has been degenerated to level lower than that of swine.

From corrupt cops to politicians in bed with gang leaders and gunmen, Jamaica is now poise for inevitable destruction and may become an island of anarchy. Jamaica is among the world leaders in gun violence and killing per capita. Not until and unless we Jamaicans on the island and across the planet eradicate garrison politics, tribal warfare and political factions, we will see our five stars and deluxe hotels become Army Camps, Barracks and abandoned buildings.

We should start fighting crime by providing jobs to the Jamaican people. It is a marvelous idea to have Investors and major hotel chain companies build lovely hotels on the island. But the Jamaican government must ensure in their negotiation with these hotel chains that they must train and employ Jamaicans in management and supervisory positions, and not just as waiters, housekeepers, gardeners and bus boys. It is shameful to see expatriates and non Jamaicans taking up all the management and supervisory positions on the island.

While I support the leadership of our new installed Commissioner of Police and National Security Minister, Admiral Lewin and National Security Minister McMillan respectively, the Jamaican people also have a role to play in fighting crime on the island. I believe that our dear Prime Minster Bruce Golding means well for the country. However, fighting crime is not just the government and security forces responsibilities, it is a task for all good and patriotic Jamaicans as well.

Let us not forget that tourism contribute largely to our economy. Without tourists, we will experience the worst economic crisis and recession in the Western hemisphere. Therefore, it is incumbent on all Jamaicans to do whatever it takes to restore law and order on the island. From my vantage point here in the United States, tourists are frightened by the crime situation in Jamaica. Many Americans are now vacationing in sunny Florida where the weather is synonymous to that of Jamaica.

If the crime situation in Jamaica is not radically reduced in the next year or so, we will suffer the consequences. I hope we will never live to see the day when the UN or the United States may have to intervene by sending Troops to restore law and order in Jamaica. That will be a sad day for Jamaica. So the arrogant Jamaican rich folks who feel safe incarcerated in their burglar barred homes may have to flee to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. We saw it happened in the 1970s and it can happen again. Therefore, it is in the interest of the wealthy Jamaicans as well along with all its citizens to fight crime now or face the possibility of a revolution which seem inevitable.

Let us all support the Police and law enforcement officers in their fight against these vicious, cold hearted and “pit bull dog heart” criminals. We should also applaud and reward the efforts of our good Police Officers. Not all of them are corrupt. The same goes for our politicians. Let us throw all those politicians with “garrison mentality” out of office immediately. Put them in prison so that the Jamaican people can see that no one is above the law on the island. Accountability should be the order of the day.

Don’t Go Bankrupt, Invest In Real Estate

My late honorable father once told me that “it is not what you make, it is what you keep.”In other words, he was saying: “Don’t tell me what you make, show me what you keep.” Like many of you, I too am puzzled and frightened by athletes and celebrities going broke and losing their homes in foreclosure. What went wrong? My honorable mother said it best by quoting the scripture: “A fool and his money shall surely part.”

I watched and observed my mother and father successfully managed and ran a home with eleven children. My father was the only source of income. He literally made peanuts working as a menial worker at a sugar factory. My mother was a housewife with no income whatsoever. They pinched and invested wisely in real estate such as lands. The land was used for cultivation then. When my father made his transition into the spiritual realm in 1989, I made one of the most crucial discoveries of my life. My mother was able to bury my father with dignity and with no financial assistance. When I looked at what they were able to save from making peanuts, I was astonished. My mother told me to take my money back with me to the United States and save it.

I said all of that to say this. What would make someone such as my poor parents stay afloat financially while athletes and celebrities who made millions are filing for bankruptcy and losing their homes in foreclosure? My parents regimentally paid tithes (10 per cent of their earnings) from every single pay check, made charitable contributions, schooled all their eleven children, etc., Yet they never experienced financial hardship. Well, it goes back to what my father skillfully said: “It’s not what you make, it is what you keep.

Since most of us were not formally trained what to do with money when we have money, let me give some solid common sense and invaluable advice. The first is humility. Humility is the greatest attribute any man or woman can have. When you have money, stay humble. No one should know when you have a $1.00 or a million dollars. This advice that I am about to give is solely for the black communities from whence I came. Because the only thing that many of us know what to do with money is to spend, spend, spend as if there is no tomorrow. We must get out of that mode of wanting to look good first. Many of us use our first $5000.00 to buy luxury cars, name brand clothes, excessive jewelry, etc., all of what is called personal property. How silly! The minute you drive off that car lot, your car depreciates. Let us start out by saving and investing wisely into real property instead of personal property. Having and owning 200 pairs of shoes, mega mansions that are not necessary, five cars, mink coats, etc., are simply idiotic. How many shoes can you wear at the same time? How many cars can you drive at the same time? How many rooms can you sleep in at the same time?

It is very important to live within your means. In other words, “hang your basket where your hand can reach it.” Don’t watch what people have, because you do not know how they got it. Do things at your own pace. Plan, plan, plan your future. “Lay your eggs how you wish to lay on them.” Take your time. “Look before you leap.” Invest at least 10 percent of each pay check. Save at least 10 per cent of each pay check. Know what to give priority. Do not spend what you don’t have. Maintain a decent credit score of at least 700. Do not max out your credit cards, equity, credit lines, 401k, etc. Get an IRA account, buy government bonds, invest wisely in the stock market by working with an honest and accessible stock broker, buy healthcare and endowment policies for your family, save into a college fund for your children, etc. The money that you are planning to use to buy silly jewelry and name brand clothes and sneakers for your children, you should put it into a college fund or money market account. Plan for inflation…$50,000 now is not $50,000 in 20 years. This is why I recommend buying and investing in real estate and commercial development. For more information on how to invest, see: www.sdcg1.com

Last but not least, wining and dining different women is NOT an investment. We saw first hand what happened to a famous athlete (Boxer) who went around and “sow his royal oats.” That is simply idiotic. Womanizing is the best way to go bankrupt. You can take that to the bank. Marry a partner who shares your goals and ambitions, and keep it all under one roof. Let me close by reiterating what I said earlier in my post… invest in real property and not in personal property. Before you buy a Rolex watch for $100,000.00, make sure you have at least $1 million dollars in real estate equity somewhere. Before you buy a luxury car or cars, make sure you have a roof over your head with substantial equity in it, and that means that you should get your tail out of your parent’s basement. Regrettably, law schools, medical schools, engineering schools, etc., do not teach you how to manage money. For more information on how to invest wisely, go to: www.sdcg1.com

Stay afloat in this bad economy and recession by holding on tight to your money. The vultures are out circling with much intensity to trick and fool you out of your money. Be wise and never be afraid to tell someone that I cannot afford it at this time. You wont learn this in law school, medical school, graduate or undergraduate school. I wish you all good fortune and great success. www.sdcg1.com

Going Green In Jamaica And Save 20 Per Cent (%) On Your Utility Bills

If you are one of those wise homeowners, developers, businessmen and women who are concerned about climate changes, high electricity bills and power outrages, going green with Capstone Micro Turbine will save you at least 20 per cent on your utility bills, while reducing NOx emissions and Greenhouse gas/CO2. For information on savings, see: www.sdcg1.com or send an email with your information to: PPearce@sdcg1.com

The Capstone Micro Turbines generate electrical power and usable exhaust heat which can provide hot water, or drive an absorption chiller for air-conditioning, among other uses. The Capstone Micro Turbine Applications, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Combined Cooling, Heating and Power (CCHP), offer a variety of societal and customer benefits. Some of the benefits are: Efficient Use of Fuel, Reduced Emissions, Reduced Greenhouse Gas/CO2, Reduced Generation costs, and Power reliability. For more information, go to: www.sdcg1.com

With respect to the efficient use of fuel, by recycling the waste heat from the electric generation process, efficiencies in excess of 80% are possible. Capstone Micro Turbines provide consistent output without fluctuations and are UL1741 certified, allowing interconnection with the utility grid. Another customer benefit of using clean, efficient DG is to secure power for critical loads. In other words, you can secure power without the use of a traditional backup diesel generator. For free consultation, see: www.sdcg1.com and send us an email at: PPearce@sdcg1.com

During imminent power failure by your utility companies which may be common in some of your areas as a result of customer loads during peak demand periods such as hot summer afternoons, this Micro Turbine Generator will allow the customer to continue power their facility in case the utility grid fails. The Capstone Micro Turbine Generator cleanly burn waste gases such as methane and other waste gases from landfills, sewage treatment plants, etc, to create renewable power and heat. This procedure replaces traditional solutions of flaring those gases letting them vent into the air causing pollution and contribute to climate changes.

It is incumbent on all of us to save our planet for our future generations. One way of doing so is to start by getting Capstone Micro Turbine Generator to not only save our planet, but tremendous savings on utility bills. To learn more on how to save on your utility bills, go to: www.sdcg1.com or send us an Email at: PPearce@sdcg1.com Save money now and our precious environment.

Young Black Men In The Caribbean…An Endangered Specie

I do not care how well some of us black men are doing as individuals, let there be no misunderstanding, we will never escape identity of our people. It is incumbent on all of us to do whatever it takes to uplift and guide our young black men in the right direction, since these are the very people who will be making decisions on our behalf in a very short while. Time is of the essence and we must act now. The days of telling black men to wait on some benevolent Black leader, Executive or Pastor to elevate their status as decent and progressive human beings are over. Training starts at home. We cannot expect teachers alone to miraculously raise and teach our children values, good manners and common decency. So I am sounding the alarm hoping to prevent these young black men from becoming endangered species or possible face extinction.

Young black men in almost every sector of the American society are failing at an alarming rate. From low enrollment in colleges and universities to the highest rate of incarceration in the world, our young black men lives are in chaos. The negative images and stereotypes of the black man are frightening. We see many of our young black men embracing and glorifying thugs, gang banging, and the most self destructive of all, referring to their women as whores and bitches. Many of them proudly refer to each other as the “N” word and are proud of it. It appears to be so noble for many of them to call each other dogs and the “N” word. When we look at television today we see thugs, rude boys, dope sellers, etc., being glorified in many of the black communities. Our black women are on music videos with strings in their backsides, while our black men are wearing corn rows, tattoos, heavy jewelry and oversized trousers hanging down their rear ends. Self respect and common decency is no longer an acceptable norm in many of our communities. Many of our black women have zero respect and tolerance towards their black men. Self hate is rampant among them. There is so much mistrust and disunity among themselves. Most of all, there is no genuine love among each other.  There must be radical change now, or regrettably, we may see a people end up with the same fate as dinosaurs. Who will save our young black men? Who should they turn to for help?

Our dear brother Bill Cosby is right. If we can find hundreds of dollars to buy sneakers over reading materials for our children, we are a people in major trouble. What I wouldn’t give to have series such as the Cosby Show on television again. The Cosby Show was one of the most positive images shown on television that Black America can be proud of. Today we have talk shows, freak shows, soap operas and sitcoms showing low class women and men making out and doing whatever it takes to be with “crack heads”, pimps and thugs for money and fame. When was the last time you see a television series that show young black scholars defying all odds and graduating as physicians, lawyers, engineers, astronauts, professors, etc? Why is it so hard for Producers and Directors to put together a positive sitcom or television series that depict positive images of black men and women in our society today? We are feeding an appetite of filth in low down people. Garbage, sex and filth sell in the black communities and that is shameful. There is hardly any positive image of black folks on television anymore. When we will see positive images of black men on television again?

With Senator Barack Obama seeking the presidency of the United States, there is some hope for young black men. I hope that young black men receive this Great American (Barack Obama) with open arms. He is such a breath of fresh air. This is one of the proudest moments of my life as a black man living in America. I can now identify with someone in black America that dresses like me, talks like me, etc., in Senator Barack Obama and other noble Black Americans. We need positive images and role models such as Senator Barack Obama, Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Dr. Condi Rice, Dr. Ben Carson, Justice Clarence Thomas, Dr. Cornel West, Bryant Gumble, Attorney Ogletree, James Blake, Maya Angelo, Magic Johnson, Oprah Winfrey, etc. However, not until we start to build colleges, universities and training centers to educate and train our young men and women, we all have failed. “A leader without a vision, the people perish.” It is high time we pool our resources and great wealth in uplifting the standard of our people. Let us not look down on them unless we are willing to pull them up. It is important that when we get to the top, we leave the ladder behind us even if we are not willing to show them how to climb each rung. I cannot help but to applaud the noble and divine efforts of my dear brother Magic Johnson for investing in communities most of us were afraid of. Special thanks to my dear sister Oprah Winfrey for building a school in Africa. We must magnify these positives attributes and contributions to humanity by these great visionaries and noble human beings. The black community needs more of these noble, divine and great Black Americans to help uplift the standard of our brothers and sisters.

While there are those who made or continue to make a genuine attempt to guide and restore young black men, there are also those hypocrites and parasites that benefit tremendously from their ignorance and disunity. There are those who give charitable contributions for tax benefits and to seek fame, praise and recognition. One of the first places you think would be an ideal place to rehabilitate and restore young troubled black men are the Church. But it seems as if our Churches are failing to reach out to these troubled black men. In many of these Churches the only people we see most times that are doing well are the pastors, their immediate family, sweethearts and lads. There seem to be more emphasis on their gator shoes, power suits, diamond rings, private jets and luxury cars than to uplift young black men. They claim to be prophets of the people, but many are more eager to profit from the people. Then you turn to Corporate America, only to find out that there is an exclusionary policy against some of these qualified black men. Yet on the other hand, doors are open for black women. It is obvious that black women are not a threat in corporate America. You turn to your political and civil right leaders and there is no help either, because it is all about their personal self interest, aggrandizement and enrichment. Last but not least, you turn to your own black man and sometimes you are treated with more scorn than from someone of another race. The black man most times will go out of his way to create a job or an opportunity for a pretty woman so as to impress her for sexual favors later over giving a fellow black man a break. I have seen this on many, many occasions. Many of our black men who are in positions to help young black men get jobs have the inability to look beyond genitalia and a fancy car. Where should the black man turn for help?

I had many friends and acquaintances that were lawyers, politicians and business executives prior to going to law school. I thought that upon graduation from law school I would have landed a fairly decent job because of such association. I was wrong. I gave this illustration and example to demonstrate that you should not look or count on your fellow black man to take you to that next level. Many of our black men that are leaders, CEO and executives lack vision. Many of them that got to the top pulled up the ladder behind them. Many of them ran away from their communities.  Some of them still remain disconnected with the community. I used to wonder why so many of our young black men resent going to colleges and universities. I now understand why. There are no jobs out there for many of them even though they have degrees and are qualified for the positions they applied for. Just imagine incurring student loans in the hundreds of thousand of dollars for your education only to find out that you cannot get a job because of your pigmentation, and lack of networking and support in your black communities. Nonetheless, I encourage you black men to go to college. As William Knibb, the great Emancipator said: “Ignorance enslaves, knowledge liberates. It is going to be a hard road for many of you even with your good and excellent qualifications. But do not give up. Stay the course. Help is on the way.

Let me conclude by saying to black men, be steadfast and be of good courage. Stay away from trouble and bad company. You are guilty by association, so chose your company wisely. Respect and abide by the law. Have an open mind. Pray and seek God’s guidance daily. Stay humble and preserve your health. Start your own business and maintain a decent credit score. Be an entrepreneur…take the risk, because it is better than sitting home. As we say in my culture: “The devil finds work for idle hands.” Do not wait or depend on anyone to survive. Let no one define who you are and limit you. You are created with an infinite potential.  Stay away from drugs, prostitution and no good women. Be a part of your children’s development. Get married and avoid dysfunctional family settings. Do not go about the place impregnating women all over. Chose one and settle down. Reprimand and discipline your children when necessary. Do not spare the rod and spoil the child. You basically have two choices in raising your children: You either raise your children with discipline, love and self respect, or else correction and law enforcement officers will do it for you later. Pick your choice! You must break the chain of poverty in your family by investing and saving money wisely. Start by putting away money for your children’s college fund, get endowment policies, life insurance, real property investment, etc, over buying silly expensive bracelets, ear rings and necklaces.   Forget about name brand clothing, expensive sneakers, fancy cars, jewelry, etc. Those are personal properties and they are worth nothing. Do not look in one particular place for your help. I want you to know that angels come in all forms. Do not limit your blessings by looking to a particular group, race or culture. Like many of you, I was looking to my fellow black man for help, but guess what?  Hadn’t it been for my White brothers and sisters, I would perish. My White brothers and sisters have embraced me with open arms over my own. I am not advocating that you should look to White people alone for your help. I am sure that there are some black men who got their breaks from another black person. You would be surprised to know how many of your White, Asian, Indian and Hispanic brothers and sisters are out there ready to embrace you over some of your own people. The late Honorable Robert Nesta Marley, aka Bob Marley musically said: “They keep us hungry and when you are going to get some food, your brother got to be your enemy, ambush in the night.”

Will The Recession In The United States Affect Jamaica’s Tourism

With a recession hovering in the United States, according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, American tourists may chose a vacation spot domestically closer to home or in sunny Florida. With millions of Americans losing their jobs and homes in foreclosure, (last month alone 80,000 Americans lost their jobs), millions without healthcare, etc., will this bad economy in the United States adversely affect tourism in Jamaica and the Caribbean at large? One famous American once said that “if America is sick, the world is dead.”

Jamaica and its citizen of over 2.5 million hope that such saying is far from true. With tourism now Jamaica’s number one industry over bauxite, sugar, coffee and bananas, any trickle down of America’s poor economy on that beautiful island may put many Jamaicans out of work, hotels and restaurants closings their doors, tour operators and travel agents going bankrupt,  and possible a destabilization of the Jamaican economy which depends heavily on the tourist dollar.

While I am optimistic that the United States will rejuvenate and survive these tough times as they did during the depression, Jamaica should market and promote its tourist’s attractions in other parts of the world such as Europe, Brazil, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, etc.  The Jamaica Tourist Board Strategists, Sales/Marketing Executives, Minister of Tourism along with Travel and Tour Operators should be busy abroad promoting that beautiful island with competitive package deals and incentives. One way of doing so is to bring back packages such as the Full American Plan (FAP) and European Plan (EP) to the island in contrast to just the “All Inclusive Package” deals.

Jamaica must address the situation of crime on the island in order to maintain its status of being one of the top tourist destinations in the world. While Jamaica is among the world leaders in gun violence and killing per capita, it is also good to report that crimes against tourists is one of the lowest in the world. I am confident and optimistic that Commissioner Admiral Hardley Lewin will radically reduce crime on the island.  However, it is a task for all Jamaicans to fight crime or else face the risk of losing tourists. Democracy And Accountability In Jamaica At Last!

Dear Mr. Prime Minister The Rt. Honorable Bruce Golding:First let me congratulate you on making it to Jamaica House. I speak on behalf of many Jamaicans across the United States, you are breath of fresh air and we are very proud of you. I personally listened to your inauguration speech and I was moved by your utmost brilliance and humility when you unequivocally declared to the world that you were a servant for the people.

Your idea to open dialogue with the Nation demonstated your willingness to serve the people of Jamaica. I have always believed that if you do not know the people by listening to their concerns, you will never be able to lead effectively. Moreover, by allowing the Jamaican people to opine is evidence of democracy at its best. Political participation is not only democratic, it is also patriotic.

Mr. Prime Minister, the saying: “A leader without a vision, the people perish” is a deep rooted ideology and philosophy that we should embrace. Your vision for Jamaica is very obvious and we applaud you. For the first time in many years, there is accountability in Jamaica and it is all because of your leadership.

I join you Mr. Prime Minister in making accountability one of your main agendas. No one should be above the law. From the garbage collectors to the Members of Parliament and Prime Minister, Commisioner of Police and every Jamaican must be held accountable. Justice MUST be rendered to all men and people.

In conclusion, let me quote the late Hon. Peter Tosh :”Every one is crying out for peace, no one is crying out for justice, but there will be no peace, until men have equal rights and justice.”

I wish you great success as Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Yours truly,
Patrick S. Pearce, J.D.

“All Inclusive Package” Deals At Hotels In The Caribbean…Who Benefits?

With almost every major hotels on the island offering “All Inclusive Packages” to foreign tourists, many hotel employees are complaining of low wages as a result of lack of tips and gratuity. An “All Inclusive Package” is a vacation deal that includes: airfare, food, beverages, transportation, etc. In other words, once a tourist gets checked into a hotel, he or she enjoys the benefits of all you can eat and drink (meals and beverages including liquor). Tourists do not pay at the Bars, Restaurants, etc., again. Everything is already prepaid in this type of package.

Prior to introducing this “All Inclusive Package” to Jamaica, they were vacation packages such as: Full American Plan (FAP) and European Plan (EP) that ruled in the 1970s and 1980s. The difference with these plans (FAP, EP, etc) in contrast to the All Inclusive Package deal, tourists were more in control of their choice of meals, when to eat, and most important, tipping was at their discretion. If you ask any hotel employees today that work as a waitor, waitress, bus boy, bell hop, front desk clerk or in housekeeping when was considered the best days of hotel work in Jamaica, I am confident that they will unequivocally say that the days of FAP, EP, etc., were the best days. With this All Inclusive Package, Jamaican workers are not making money, because they are not getting tips. Most hotels in Jamaica pay employees very trivial and nominal amount of wages. It is not even sufficient for most of them to travel back and forth to work. So although it is quite evident that tourists benefit more from the “All Inclusive Package” deals, the common people/workers are just simply getting dressed to perform a task that is not rewarding them.

We should allow tourists to tip at their discretion again by introducing other package deals such as the FAP, EP, etc., to the island hotels. While the “All Inclusive Package” may be beneficial to tourists, and yes, we want tourists, because it stimulates our economy, we cannot ignore the cries of the common man. We must ensure that at least some of the money get into Jamaica under this “All Inclusive Package” deal. It is noble to treat our employees with respect and dignity. Jamaica can boast as one of the best tourist destinations in the world over.  However, let us invoke the divine principle: “By the sweat of your brow, ye shall eat bread” and pay our employees a decent salary so that they can feed and take care of their families.
